Eventually, I did it because of luck - I had a buff that auto-healed me when my health was low, which gave me just enough survivability to take a couple of free hits in the boss’s third phase. You can sprint there and ignore combat, but then you’ll miss out on health upgrades, weapons, and other buffs that could be beneficial when you eventually get another shot at the boss. Yes, you can skip over the first boss, but you have to fight through a dark forest full of spindly nightmares before trekking through an arid desert baked down under the heat of a red sun, battling floating tentacle monsters as you go. Overall I'm giving Returnal an 8 out of 10. The game also completely lacks any sort of difficulty setting, so if you don't like difficult games or easily get frustrated, you might want to give this game a pass, but if you don't mind a challenge, this is a really fun game. To put it another way, deaths hurt a lot more in Returnal than they do in Demon's Souls. The game is harder than Demon's Souls in my opinion, which really comes down to a combination of difficulty and the game's rogue-like mechanics. Now keep in mind, being a rogue-like title, each attempt basically means replaying the game from the start and surviving all the way up to the boss. I consider myself a hardcore gamer but it still took several attempts to beat the first boss. The recommendation to 'put the console into rest mode' just isn't good enough in a AAA title. As soon as you exit the game, it's equivalent to death and having to restart from the beginning.
